MAPPING THE BORDER CONDITION

Borders are one of the most important instruments that shape our perception. They can be geographical, social, psychological, or simply graphical.
An insight into the meaning and characteristics of border conditions is important in architecture, since it can clarify the position of the
discipline. Architecture can be regarded as the discourse on spatiality. Throughout its profound history, architectural vision and creation has
managed to escape the controlling instruments of society that has tried to “use” architecture for the solving of problems. Architecture is, however,
essentially transgressive. Precisely because of its capacity to transgress its developed knowledge and experience, architecture is not only capable of
dealing with social and technological problems (merely presented by functional solutions), but also (and especially) of creating a place that
does justice to the depth and richness of human culture.

Marc Schoonderbeek
Dopo la laurea in architettura al Politecnico TU Eindhoven, Marc Schonderbeek (1965) lavora come architetto nei Paesi Bassi, Germania (Studio Libeskind) e Israele. Nel 1998 fonda ad Amsterdam lo studio di architettura e urban design 12PM con Prina Avidar. Marc è professore di architettura alla Technische Universiteit Delft, coordinatore del Master Program all'interno del Public Builiding department, coordinatore del gruppo di ricerca Border Conditions, fondatore del 66 EAST Centre for Urban Culture ad Amsterdam. Al momento Marc è editore della rivista internazionale di architettura OASE, insegna regolarmente in diverse università olandesi e lavora ad una ricerca dottorale che indaga il rapporto tra teorie architettoniche, tecniche di rappresentazione e progetto.
